Lay Down the Law

In my public speaking book I show you should always give a clear set of  rules to your audience before beginning your presentation. It can be vital to the overall outcome of your performance if you lay down the law first so there is no confusion in your audience. For example, if you do not want to answer questions until the end of your program, state that in the beginning so your not interrupted during your presentation.

If you are going to let the audience ask questions throughout, ask that they be kept to a certain amount of time (like 30 seconds or less). Getting everyone to agree to your plan in the beginning puts enormous peer pressure on an individual violating any of the rules. Using the skills from my public speaking book means that you control the event and the environment to maximize the connection with your audience.
